Samsung SDI has made a significant splash at “InterBattery Europe 2024,” held in Munich, Germany, from June 19 to 21. The company unveiled its enhanced Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.5, aiming to capture a larger share of the global Energy Storage Systems (ESS) market with its improved capacity and safety features.

The SBB 1.5, which boasts a total capacity of 5.26MWh, represents a substantial upgrade over previous models. By optimizing internal space, Samsung SDI has increased the energy density per container unit by approximately 37%. This allows for the installation of four containers adjacently, significantly reducing the required installation space. The enhanced thermal propagation prevention, achieved through module-integrated direct injection (EDI) technology, further strengthens the product's fire prevention and spread prevention functions. In the event of a fire, the EDI technology sprays extinguishing agents on the entire module containing the affected cell, preventing the spread of flames.

Samsung SDI's participation in InterBattery Europe is part of “The Smarter E Europe,” the largest energy industry-related exhibition in Europe, which this year features a record-breaking 2,800 companies. Under the theme “A Sustainable Future Realized with PRiMX,” Samsung SDI is not only showcasing the SBB 1.5 but also introducing its future cell lineup strategy optimized for the ESS market. Starting in 2026, the company plans to add Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries to its lineup for power ESS products, adopting a “two-track” strategy alongside high-energy-density Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) batteries. This approach aims to meet diverse market needs, including the growing demand for reliable energy storage solutions driven by the rise of renewable energy sources and the expansion of data centers in the AI era.

Choi Yoon-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, emphasized the company's commitment to innovation and market leadership. "We plan to lead the global ESS market by launching various product lineups, including the new SBB products realized with super-gap technological competitiveness, and actively pioneering new markets driven by the acceleration of the AI era," Choi stated.

The SBB 1.5's unveiling follows Samsung SDI's win of the “'Best Innovation Award for ESS” at the “InterBattery Awards 2024” in March, further solidifying the company's reputation for cutting-edge technology in the battery industry. The SBB is designed to install high-nickel NCA battery cells, modules, and racks in a 20-foot container box, ready for immediate use upon connection to the power grid.

Samsung SDI's strategic focus on both NCA and LFP batteries reflects broader industry trends towards safer and more efficient energy storage solutions. The company's plans to supply high-output cells for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) also highlight its proactive response to new demands, such as the increase in data centers driven by the AI era.
